Why Include a Multi-Sport Athletic Field?
This capital project provides the district with a great opportunity to enhance the entire student experience. One of them is a multi-sport athletic facility.
There are three big reasons why the athletic facility is being included in this project.
1. The current grass field at the high school has taken a beating.
Grass fields aren’t meant to be used by multiple teams in a single season. They get chewed up. Ours is no exception.
2. The district is running low on field space.
By having a multi-sport synthetic turf field that can be used around the clock with limited wear and tear, the district will greatly enhance its available space.
3. A capital project represents the best opportunity to replace a field.
The fact is, a synthetic turf field is simply too expensive to fund any other way. The district can’t build a field in-house, and it can’t pay for a field out of the yearly budget. The only way to do something this big is through a capital project where the state covers 75% of the cost. The fact that the district has already saved the other 25% makes the timing even better.
Bonus Reason:
By installing a synthetic turf field at the high school, we can greatly diminish the amount of rainwater that runs onto the lower fields.
That’s because the synthetic turf field will be built atop a modern drainage system.
So instead of the rainwater running downhill and pooling on the lower fields, oftentimes leaving them unplayable, the water will be absorbed on-site and drained appropriately.
Who will benefit from the field?
students
The new high school field could support all levels of soccer, lacrosse, football, and track. That’s over 400 student athletes.
And because the field would be on-site, students wouldn’t have to choose between after school activities and sports. They could do both and simply walk to practice when their activities were over.
Students could more easily attend each other’s sporting events, as well, creating a greater sense of community and school pride.
Spectators
The new facility would include new bleachers with 1250 seats, making our games more comfortable and accessible for the entire community.
The District
The new field, track, and expanded bleachers would make Cornwall Central High School a prime candidate to host sectionals and other regional events, providing an added source of revenue - and pride - for the district.
